DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING
Pinpoint Tests
NOTE: Use Rotunda 73 Digital Multimeter 105-R0051 or equivalent to perform electrical pinpoint tests.
PINPOINT TEST A: IGNITION SWITCH INOPERATIVE
A1 CHECK POWER FEED
- Remove power distribution box fuses P (50A), N (50A) and J (20A).
- Check for voltage between a known good ground and feed side of fuses P, N and J.
Is battery voltage present?
Yes | No |
GO to A2. | INSPECT fuse links A and B for damage. REPLACE fuse links. INSPECT Circuit 37 (Y) between starter motor relay and power distribution box. SERVICE Circuit 37 (Y) for an open. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. |
A2 CHECK POWER DISTRIBUTION BOX
- Check power distribution box fuses P (50A), N (50A) and J (20A) for continuity.
Is continuity present?
Yes | No |
GO to A3. | REPLACE noncontinuous fuses. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. |
A3 CHECK IGNITION SWITCH POWER
- Remove ignition switch connector.
- Check for voltage between Circuit 37 (Y) at Pins B1-B5 on ignition switch connector and a known good ground.
Is battery voltage present?
Yes | No |
GO to A4. | SERVICE open circuit between power distribution box and ignition switch, Circuit 37 (Y). RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. |
A4 CHECK IGNITION SWITCH
- Perform the Ignition Switch Mechanical Test. Refer to Component Tests in this section.
Is the ignition switch OK?
Yes | No |
System OK. | REPLACE ignition switch. |
PINPOINT TEST B: NO POWER IN ACC POSITION
B1 ACCESSORY FEED CHECK
- Key in ACC.
- Using multimeter with a lead connected to a known good ground, check for voltage at Pin A1, Circuit 297 (BK/LG).
Is battery voltage present?
B2 IGNITION SWITCH CONTINUITY TEST
- Remove ignition switch. Refer to Ignition Switch in the Removal and Installation portion of this section.
- Remove wiring connectors.
- Actuate ignition switch to the ACC position.
- Check for continuity between Pins B5 and A1.
Is continuity present?
Yes | No |
INSPECT power distribution box fuse P. SERVICE Circuit 37 (Y) from power distribution box fuse P to ignition switch. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. | REPLACE ignition switch. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. |
B3 CHECK IP FUSE PANEL VOLTAGE
- Key in ACC.
- Using a multimeter with one lead connected to a known good ground, check for voltage on Circuit 297 (BK/LG) at the feed side of IP fuses 2, 6, 11 and 14.
Is battery voltage present?
Yes | No |
GO to B4. | SERVICE open in Circuit 297 (BK/LG) between ignition switch and IP fuse panel. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. |
B4 CHECK IP FUSE PANEL
- Key OFF.
- Check continuity of instrument panel fuse panel fuses 2 (30A), 6 (15A), 11 (15A) and 14 (20A c.b.).
Is continuity present?
Yes | No |
SERVICE accessory feed wiring for opens, Circuits 65 (DG), 182 (BR/W), 137 (Y/BK) and 400 (LB/BK). RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. | REPLACE instrument panel fuse panel fuse. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. |
PINPOINT TEST C: NO POWER IN RUN POSITION
C1 RUN FEED CHECK
- Key in RUN.
- Using multimeter with a lead connected to a known good ground, check for voltage at Pins I1, A1, A3, A2, A4, Circuits 16 (R/LG), 297 (BK/LG), 687 (GY/Y) and 687 (GY/Y) respectively.
Is battery voltage present?
C2 IGNITION SWITCH CONTINUITY TEST
- Remove ignition switch. Refer to Ignition Switch in the Removal and Installation portion of this section.
- Remove wiring connectors.
- Actuate ignition switch to the RUN position.
- Check for continuity between Pins B5 and I1, B1 and A1, B3 and A3, B2 and A2, Circuits 37 (Y), 16 (R/LG), 37 (Y), 297 (BK/LG), 37 (Y), 687 (GY/Y), 37 (Y), 687 (GY/Y) respectively.
Is continuity present?
Yes | No |
INSPECT power distribution box fuses P, N and J. SERVICE Circuit 37 (Y) from power distribution box fuses to ignition switch. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. | REPLACE ignition switch. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. |
C3 CHECK IP FUSE PANEL VOLTAGE
- Key in RUN.
- Using multimeter with one lead connected to a known good ground, check for voltage on Circuits 16 (R/LG), 16 (R/LG), 297 (BK/LG), 687 (GY/Y), 687 (GY/Y), 687 (GY/Y) at the feed side of IP fuses 17; 3; 2, 6, 11, 14; 7; 1; and 15 and 18 respectively.
Is battery voltage present?
Yes | No |
GO to C4. | SERVICE open in affected circuit between ignition switch and instrument panel fuse panel. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. |
C4 CHECK IP FUSE PANEL
- Key OFF.
- Check continuity of instrument panel fuse panel fuses 17 (10A), 3 (3A), 2 (30A), 6 (15A), 11 (15A), 14 (20A c.b.), 7 (15A), 1 (30A), 15 (20A) and 18 (10A).
Is continuity present?
Yes | No |
SERVICE run feed wiring for opens, Circuits 640 (R/Y), 276 (BR), 65 (DG), 182 (BR/W), 137 (Y/BK), 400 (LB/BK), 8 (O/Y), 399 (BR/Y), 601 (LB/PK) and 296 (W/P). RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. | REPLACE instrument panel fuse panel fuse. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. |
PINPOINT TEST D: NO POWER IN START POSITION
D1 START FEED CHECK
CAUTION: Do not overcrank the starter motor when performing the following pinpoint test steps. Both mechanical and electrical damage to the starter motor could result.
NOTE: When probing for voltage on more than one pin of the ignition switch, use multiple multimeters and assistants to watch the voltage levels on the multimeters while the starter motor is being cranked. Set up and securely connect all wires to the ignition switch pins and connect those leads to the positive leads of the multimeters before performing the test step. The negative leads of the multimeters are connected to a known good ground.
- Disconnect ignition coil primary wire.
- Key in START.
- Using a multimeter with a lead connected to a known good ground, check for voltage at Pins I1 and STA, Circuits 16 (R/LG) and 32 (R/BL) respectively.
- Connect the positive lead to the positive battery post. Connect the negative lead to Pins P1 and P2, Circuits 41 (BK/LB) and 512 (T/LG) respectively.
Is battery voltage present?
D2 IGNITION SWITCH CONTINUITY TEST
- Remove ignition switch. Refer to Ignition Switch in the Removal and Installation portion of this section.
- Remove wiring connectors.
- Actuate ignition switch to the START position.
- Check for continuity between Pins B5 and I1, B4 and STA, P1 and GND, and P2 and GND, Circuits 37 (Y), 16 (R/LG), 37 (Y), 32 (R/BL), 41 (BK/LB), 57 (BK), 512 (T/LG), 57 (BK) respectively.
Is continuity present?
Yes | No |
INSPECT power distribution box fuses P and J. SERVICE Circuit 37 (Y) from power distribution box fuses to ignition switch. SERVICE open in Circuit 41 (BK/LB) or Circuit 512 (T/LG). RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. | REPLACE ignition switch. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. |
D3 CHECK IP FUSE PANEL VOLTAGE
- Key in START.
- Using a multimeter with one lead connected to a known good ground, check for voltage on Circuits 16 (R/LG) and 16 (R/LG) at feed side of instrument panel fuses 17 and 3.
Is battery voltage present?
Yes | No |
GO to D4. | SERVICE open in affected circuit between ignition switch and instrument panel fuse panel. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. |
D4 CHECK STARTING SYSTEM FEED
- Key in START.
- Check for voltage on Circuit 32 (R/LB) at clutch pedal position switch (manual transmission) or transmission range sensor (automatic transmission).
Is battery voltage present?
D5 CHECK IP FUSE PANEL
- Key OFF.
- Check continuity of instrument panel fuse panel fuses 17 (10A) and 3 (3A).
Is continuity present?
Yes | No |
SERVICE START feed wiring for opens, Circuits 16 (R/LG) and 16 (R/LG). RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. | REPLACE instrument panel fuse panel fuse. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. |
PINPOINT TEST E: MULTI-FUNCTION SWITCH DOES NOT OPERATE
E1 CHECK FUSES
- Check instrument panel fuse panel fuses 2 (30A), 7 (15A) and 13 (15A) for continuity.
- Check power distribution box fuses C (30A) and R (40A) for continuity.
Is continuity present?
Yes | No |
GO to E2. | REPLACE damaged fuse(s). RETEST system. |
E2 CHECK CIRCUITS 44 (LB) and 385 (R/W)
- Key in RUN.
- Check for voltage at Pins C1-1 and C1-4, Circuits 44 (LB) and 385 (R/W) at multi-function switch connector.
Is battery voltage present?
Yes | No |
GO to E3. | SERVICE open in affected circuit between multi-function switch and indicator flashers located in the instrument panel fuse panel. REPLACE indicator flashers. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. |
E3 CHECK CIRCUITS 2 (W/LB) AND 3 (LG/W)
- Key in RUN.
- Actuate turn signal to left and right positions.
- Check for intermittent battery voltage at Pins C1-5 and C1-8, Circuits 2 (W/LB) and 3 (LG/WP).
Is intermittent battery voltage present?
Yes | No |
GO to E4. | REPLACE multi-function switch. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. |
E4 CHECK CIRCUITS 5 (O/LB) AND 9 (LG/O)
- Key in RUN.
- Actuate turn signal to left and right positions.
- Check for intermittent battery voltage at Pins C1-2 and C1-10, Circuits 5 (O/LB) and 9 (LG/O).
Is intermittent battery voltage present?
Yes | No |
GO to E5. | REPLACE multi-function switch. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. |
E5 CHECK FLASH-TO-PASS SWITCH FEED
- Check for battery voltage on Pin C2-7, Circuit 196 (DB/O) at multi-function switch.
Is battery voltage present?
Yes | No |
GO to E6. | SERVICE open circuit between power distribution box fuse C, Circuit 38 (BK/O) and multi-function switch, Pin C2-7, Circuit 196 (DB/O). RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. |
E6 CHECK HEADLAMP DIMMER SWITCH FEED
- Actuate headlamp switch to the HEAD position.
- Check for battery voltage on Pin C2-2, Circuit 15 (R/Y) at multi-function switch.
Is battery voltage present?
Yes | No |
GO to E7. | SERVICE open circuit between headlamp switch and multi-function switch, Circuit 15 (R/Y). If condition continues, REFER to Section 17-01. |
E7 CHECK LOW BEAM OUTPUT
- Actuate headlamp switch to the HEAD position.
- Multi-function switch dimmer switch to LO beam position.
- Check battery voltage on Pin C2-3, Circuit 13 (R/BK).
Is battery voltage present?
Yes | No |
GO to E8. | REPLACE multi-function switch. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. |
E8 CHECK HIGH BEAM OUTPUT
- Actuate headlamp switch to the HEAD position.
- Multi-function switch dimmer switch to HI beam position.
- Check for battery voltage on Pin C2-5, Circuit 12 (LG/BK).
Is battery voltage present?
Yes | No |
GO to E9. | REPLACEmulti-function switch. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. |
E9 CHECK WIPER/WASHER SWITCH
- Actuate wiper switch to the OFF position.
- Connect an ohmmeter between Pins C2-1, Circuit 589 (O) and C2-4, Circuit 993 (BR/W). The meter should indicate approximately 36k ohms.
Does meter indicate approximately 36k ohms?
Yes | No |
GO to E10. | REFER to Section 01-16 and Multi-Function Switch Continuity Test. REFER to Component Tests in the Diagnosis and Testing portion of this section. |
E10 FINAL CHECK
- Reconnect all electrical connections.
Does multi-function switch operate properly?
