DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING
Pinpoint Tests
PINPOINT TEST A: WINDSHIELD WASHER SYSTEM INOPERATIVE
A1 WINDSHIELD WASHERS INOPERATIVE
- Check fluid level of windshield washer reservoir.
Is windshield washer reservoir empty?
Yes | No |
FILL windshield washer reservoir. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. | GO to A2. |
A2 TURN ON WASHER SWITCH
- Key to RUN, check operation ofwindshield washer pump.
Does windshield washer pump run?
A3 INSPECT WINDSHIELD WASHER NOZZLE JET FOR BLOCKAGE
- Inspect windshield washer nozzle jet for blockage.
Is windshield washer nozzle jet blocked?
Yes | No |
CLEAN or REPLACE windshield washer nozzle jet. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. | GO to A4. |
A4 INSPECT HOSE, FILTER, CHECK VALVE FOR BLOCKAGE OR KINKS
- Inspect hose for blockage or kinks.
Are any blockages or kinks present?
Yes | No |
CLEAN, SERVICE or REPLACE as necessary. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. | GO to A5. |
A5 INSPECT WINDSHIELD WASHER PUMP INLET/OUTLET FOR BLOCKAGE
- Inspect windshield washer pump inlet/outlet for blockage.
Is windshield washer pump inlet/outlet blocked or obstructed?
Yes | No |
REMOVE windshield washer pump from windshield washer reservoir and CLEAN. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. | REPLACE windshield washer pump. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. |
A6 CHECK FOR VOLTAGE AT WINDSHIELD WASHER PUMP
- Using a voltmeter, actuate the washer switch and check for voltage at windshield washer pump.
Is battery voltage present?
A7 CHECK WINDSHIELD WASHER PUMP GROUND
- Using an ohmmeter connected to a known good ground, check ground at windshield washer pump connector with the other test lead.
Is connector properly grounded with resistance of 5 ohms or less?
Yes | No |
REPLACE windshield washer pump. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. | SERVICE Circuit 57 (BK) for open circuit. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. |
A8 TURN ON WINDSHIELD WIPERS
- Check operation of windshield wipers.
Do wipers operate?
A9 CHECK MULTI-FUNCTION SWITCH RESISTANCE AT WIPER CONTROL MODULE
- Unplug connector from wiper control module.
- Depress windshield washer switch on end of the multi-function switch.
- Using an ohmmeter, check continuity between Circuits 993 (BR/W) and 590 (DB/W).
Is there continuity?
A10 CHECK MULTI-FUNCTION SWITCH
- Unplug multi-function switch connector.
- Depress multi-function switch.
- Check for continuity between terminals 4 and 6.
Is there continuity?
Yes | No |
SERVICE open circuit between multi-function switch and wiper control module. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. | REPLACE multi-function switch. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. |
A11 CHECK WASHER PUMP CIRCUIT
- Check continuity of Circuit 941 (BK/W) from wiper control module to windshield washer pump.
Is there continuity?
Yes | No |
REPLACE wiper control module. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. | SERVICE Circuit 941 (BK/W) for open circuit. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. |
PINPOINT TEST B: WINDSHIELD WIPERS INOPERATIVE— ALL SWITCH POSITIONS
B1 CHECK FOR SUPPLY VOLTAGE AT MOTOR
- Key to RUN.
- Turn multi-function switch to HI.
- Unplug windshield wiper motor.
- Check for battery voltage at Circuit 65 (DG).
Is battery voltage present?
Yes | No |
GO to B2. | CHECK for open fuse. REPLACE fuse. If fuse fails again, SERVICE B+ short to ground in Circuit 65 (DG). RETEST system. |
B2 CHECK FOR BATTERY VOLTAGE AT THE WINDSHIELD WIPER CONTROL MODULE
- Check for battery voltage at Circuit 65 (DG) Pins 2 and 11 of connector.
Is battery voltage present?
Yes | No |
GO to B3. | SERVICE open in power feed to windshield wiper control module. |
B3 CHECK FOR BATTERY VOLTAGE TO MOTOR WINDINGS
- Key to RUN.
- Turn multi-function switch to HI.
- Disconnect connector from windshield wiper motor.
- Check for battery voltage between Circuits 61 (Y/R) and 58 (W).
Is battery voltage present?
Yes | No |
REPLACE wiper motor. | GO to B4. |
B4 CHECK FOR BATTERY VOLTAGE AT WINDSHIELD WIPER CONTROL MODULE CONNECTOR
- Check for battery voltage between Pin 10 Circuit 61 (Y/R) and Pin 14 Circuit 58 (W) of windshield wiper control module connector.
Is battery voltage present?
Yes | No |
CHECK for:- Open wire Circuits 58 (W) or 61 (Y/R).
- Unseated terminals.
| GO to B5. |
B5 CHECK WIRING BETWEEN WINDSHIELD WIPER CONTROL MODULE AND MULTI-FUNCTION SWITCH
- Disconnect connector from windshield wiper control module and column connector to switch.
- Measure resistance between Circuits 993 (BR/W) and 589 (O) with multi-function switch at HI.
Is resistance less than 5 ohm?
Yes | No |
REPLACE wiper control module. | GO to B6. |
B6 CHECK WIPER SWITCH CONTINUITY
- Disconnect multi-function switch harness at steering column.
- Check continuity between terminals 1 and 4 with switch at HI in on position.
Is resistance less than 1 ohm?
Yes | No |
CHECK for open wire between multi-function switch and wiper control module. SERVICE as required. | REPLACE multi-function switch. |
PINPOINT TEST C: WINDSHIELD WIPERS INOPERATIVE AT HIGH SPEED
C1 CHECK FOR BATTERY VOLTAGE TO MOTOR WINDINGS
- Key to RUN.
- Turn multi-function switch to HI.
- Disconnect connector from windshield wiper motor.
- Check for battery voltage between Circuits 61 (Y/R) and 58 (W).
Is voltage present?
Yes | No |
REPLACE wiper motor. | GO to C2. |
C2 CHECK FOR BATTERY VOLTAGE AT WIPER CONTROL MODULE CONNECTOR
- Check for battery voltage between Pins 10 and 14 (Circuits 61 [Y/R] and 58 [W]) of windshield wiper control module connector.
Is voltage present with multi-function switch at HI?
Yes | No |
CHECK for:- Open in Circuits 58 (W)or 61 (Y/R).
- Open connector.
GO to B3. | GO to C3. |
C3 CHECK WIRING BETWEEN WIPER CONTROL MODULE AND WIPER SWITCH
- Disconnect connector from windshield wiper control module.
- Measure resistance between Circuits 993 (BR/W) and 589 (O) with multi-function switch at HI.
Is resistance less than 1.0 ohm?
Yes | No |
REPLACE windshield wiper control module. | GO to C4. |
C4 CHECK CONTROL LINE SIGNAL AT WIPER SWITCH
- Disconnect harness from the multi-function switch.
- Check continuity between terminals 4 and 1.
Is resistance less than 1.0 ohm?
Yes | No |
SERVICE open wire between multi-function switch and windshield wiper control module. | REPLACE multi-function switch. |
PINPOINT TEST D: WINDSHIELD WIPERS INOPERATIVE AT LOW SPEED
D1 CHECK FOR BATTERY VOLTAGE TO MOTOR WINDINGS
- Key to RUN.
- Turn multi-function switch to LO.
- Disconnect connector from windshield wiper motor.
- Check for battery voltage between Circuits 61 (Y/R) and 56 (DB/O).
Is voltage present?
Yes | No |
REPLACE wiper motor. | GO to D2. |
D2 CHECK FOR BATTERY VOLTAGE AT WIPER CONTROL MODULE CONNECTOR
- Check for battery voltage between Pins 10 and 8 (Circuits 61 [Y/R] and 56 [DB/O]) of windshield wiper control module connector.
Is voltage present with multi-function switch at LO?
Yes | No |
CHECK for:- Open in Circuits 56 (DB/O) or 61 (Y/R).
- Open connector.
| GO to D3. |
D3 CHECK WIRING BETWEEN WIPER CONTROL MODULE AND WIPER SWITCH
- Disconnect connector from windshield wiper control module.
- Measure resistance between Circuits 993 (BR/W) and 589 (O) with multi-function switch at LO.
Is resistance between 3.5 and 4.5 ohms?
Yes | No |
REPLACE windshield wiper control module. | GO to D4. |
D4 CHECK CONTROL LINE SIGNAL AT WIPER SWITCH
- Disconnect harness from the multi-function switch.
- Check continuity between terminals 4 and 1.
Is resistance between 3.5 and 4.5 ohms?
Yes | No |
SERVICE open wire between multi-function switch and windshield wiper control module. | REPLACE multi-function switch. |
PINPOINT TEST E: WINDSHIELD WIPERS INOPERATIVE AT INTERVAL SETTING
E1 CHECK OPERATION
- Check operation of wipers in low speed setting.
Does low speed work?
E2 CHECK MODE SELECT INPUT SIGNAL
- Disconnect connector from windshield wiper control module.
- Measure resistance between Circuits 993 (BR/W) and 589 (O) with multi-function switch at interval.
Is resistance between 10.5k ohms and 12.0k ohms?
E3 CHECK MODE SELECT SIGNAL AT WIPER SWITCH
- Disconnect harness from the multi-function switch.
- Measure between terminals 4 and 1 with multi-function switch at interval.
Is resistance between 10.5k ohms and 12.0k ohms?
Yes | No |
CHECK for open wire between multi-function switch and windshield wiper control module. SERVICE as required. | REPLACE multi-function switch. SERVICE as required. |
E4 CHECK INTERVAL SELECT INPUT SIGNAL
- Measure resistance between Circuits 590 (DB/W) and 993 (BR/W) at the wiper control module connector while rotating the interval select on the multi-function switch from S to F.
Is resistance 3.3k-103.3k ohms?
Yes | No |
REPLACE windshield wiper control module. | GO to E5. |
E5 CHECK INTERVAL SELECT INPUT SIGNAL AT WIPER SWITCH
- Measure resistance between terminals 4 and 1, while rotating the interval select on the multi-function switch from S to F.
Is resistance 3.3k-103.3k ohms?
Yes | No |
CHECK for open wires between the multi-function switch and the windshield wiper control module. SERVICE as required. | REPLACE multi-function switch. SERVICE as required. |
PINPOINT TEST F: WINDSHIELD WIPERS WILL NOT PARK AT PROPER POSITION
F1 CHECK WIPER MOTOR GROUND
- Unplug wiper motor connector. Check for ground at Circuit 57 (BK).
Is ground OK?
Yes | No |
GO to F2. | SERVICE Circuit 57 (BK) for open circuit. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. |
F2 CHECK FOR POWER AT WIPER MOTOR
- Key to RUN and multi-function switch OFF.
- Check for battery voltage between Circuit 65 (DG) and Circuit 57 (BK) at the motor connector.
Is battery voltage present?
Yes | No |
GO to F3. | SERVICE open circuits. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. |
F3 CHECK MOTOR CIRCUIT CONTINUITY THROUGH WIPER CONTROL MODULE
- With wiper switch at OFF, check continuity of Circuit 28 (BK/PK) to 56 (DB/O) and Circuit 61 (Y/R) to 57 (BK).
Is continuity OK?
F4 CHECK CIRCUITS TO WIPER CONTROL MODULE
- Unplug wiper control module connector.
- Check continuity of Circuits 28 (BK/PK), 56 (DB/O), 61 (Y/R), and 57 (BK) from wiper motor to wiper control module.
Is continuity OK?
Yes | No |
REPLACE wiper control module. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. | SERVICE open circuits. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. |
F5 CHECK WIPER LINKAGE
- Check that wiper linkage is not bent, cracked or mispositioned from motor shaft.
Is linkage OK?
Yes | No |
REPLACE windshield wiper motor. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. | SERVICE linkage. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. |
PINPOINT TEST G: WINDSHIELD WIPERS CONTINUE TO RUN WHEN SWITCH IS TURNED OFF
G1 CHECK CONNECTIONS
- Check that windshield wiper motor and wiper control module connectors are fully seated.
Are connections OK?
Yes | No |
GO to G2. | SERVICE as required. RECHECK system. |
G2 CHECK CIRCUIT CONTINUITY THROUGH WIPER CONTROL MODULE
- Disconnect windshield wiper motor.
- With wiper switch at OFF, check continuity of Circuit 28 (BK/PK) to 56 (DB/O) and Circuit 61 (Y/R) to 57 (BK) at motor connector.
Is there continuity?
Yes | No |
REPLACE windshield wiper motor. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. | GO to G3. |
G3 CHECK CIRCUITS TO WIPER CONTROL MODULE
- Check continuity of Circuits 28 (BK/PK), 56 (DB/O), 61 (Y/R) and 57 (BK) from windshield wiper motor to wiper control module.
Is continuity OK?
Yes | No |
GO to G4. | SERVICE circuits as required. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. |
G4 CHECK CIRCUITS TO WINDSHIELD WIPER SWITCH
- With wiper switch at OFF, measure resistance between Circuits 589 (O) and 933 (BR/W) at wiper module.
Is resistance 45k ohms to 50k ohms?
Yes | No |
REPLACE wiper control module. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. | GO to G5. |
G5 CHECK CIRCUIT CONTINUITY
- Check continuity of Circuits 589 (O) and 993 (BR/W) between wiper switch and wiper control module.
Is continuity OK?
Yes | No |
REPLACE multi-function switch. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. | SERVICE open circuits. RESTORE vehicle. RETEST system. |
