REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

Steering Shaft, Intermediate, F-150, F-250, F-350 and Bronco

Removal

 CAUTION: Steering column should be in the locked position, or the lower end of the steering column is to be secured or wired in such a way as to prevent the steering column from rotating and damaging the air bag sliding contact (14A664).

  1. Remove bolt from upper U-joint-to-shaft connection. Collapse intermediate lower shaft.

  1. Unclip steering gear shield from gear and slide up shaft.

  1. Remove bolt retaining intermediate lower shaft assembly to steering gear input shaft.

  1. From inside of engine compartment, remove intermediate lower shaft.

Installation

  1.  CAUTION: Be sure to use two new bolts N803942-S100 for reinstallation of intermediate shaft from steering gear to steering column.

    From inside of engine compartment, install a new bolt from intermediate shaft through boot and to steering gear input shaft. Tighten new bolt to 41-57 Nm (30-42 lb-ft).

  1. Slide steering gear shield over coupling and attach to gear.

  1. Extend intermediate shaft and insert a new bolt into upper assembly U-joint at end of steering column. Tighten new bolt to 41-57 Nm (30-42 lb-ft).

  1. Check steering column for proper operation.
