SERVICE PROCEDURES

Fluid Leak

 
  1.  CAUTION: Do not hold steering wheel (3600) in the far left or right position, or damage to power steering pump (3A674) may result.

    With engine idling, turn steering wheel left to right several times from stop to stop. Check all possible leakage points.

  1. Tighten all loose fittings. Replace damaged lines and seals.

Power Steering Integral Gear Leak Inspection






Leak CategoryRequired Service
1. Sector adjusterTighten lock nut to 48-61 Nm (35-45 lb-ft). Replace nut if leakage continues. Check the cover surface for damage.
2. Sector shaft coverTighten bolts to 75-94 Nm (55-69 lb-ft). Replace seal. Examine cover and housing for damage when replacing seal.
3. Hose connectionsTighten fitting nuts to 30-40 Nm (22-30 lb-ft). If leakage continues, remove hose and clean interface area. If tube nut threads are damaged, replace hose. If tube seats are damaged, replace tube seat. If housing threads are badly stripped, replace the valve housing only.
4. Steering gear input shaft seal kitsReplace input shaft seals and snap ring. Check shaft surface for damage. Check housing seal bore for damage.
5. Control valve housing mounting faceTighten control valve housing bolts to 42-62 Nm (31-46 lb-ft). If leak continues, replace O-ring. Examine sealing surface for damage.
6. Sector shaft seals and snap ringReplace sector shaft seals. Check seal bore, shaft, and snap ring groove for damage. Check sector housing roller bearing for damage.
7. Gear housing castingReplace gear housing.

NOTE: For repair and replacement procedures in the following chart, refer to Section 11-02A.



 CAUTION:Do not overtighten.

Note: Use of a tapered shaft may be required to stretch Teflon® washer to allow for installation onto tube nut.

1. Rotor shaft sealReplace pump.
2. Reservoir O-ring sealReplace pump.
3. Power steering return hoseReposition or replace power steering return line clamp.
4. Power steering pump valve outlet fittingTighten power steering pump valve outlet fitting 35-54 Nm (26-40 lb-ft). If leak continues, replace pump.
5. Hose tube nutTighten pressure hose tube nut to 41-54 Nm (30-40 lb-ft).
 If leak continues, remove tube nut and inspect Teflon® washer. Replace if required.
 If leak is due to pressure hose assembly O-ring, replace hose assembly.
6. Power steering pump oil reservoir filler capCheck for damaged or missingpower steering pump oil reservoir filler cap or dipstick. Check oil level, and correct as required. If leak continues, replace pump.
