INSTALLATION

Transmission

  1. Tighten converter drain plug to 28-30 Nm (21-23 lb-ft).

  1. Position the torque converter (7902) on the transmission, ensuring the converter drive flats are fully engaged in the pump gear by rotating the torque converter.

  1.  CAUTION: Prior to installation of the transmission assembly, the torque converter pilot hub must be properly lubricated.

Lubricate torque converter pilot hub with Ford Multi-Purpose Grease D0AZ-19584-AA or equivalent, meeting Ford specification ESA-M1C45-A.

  1. With the torque converter properly installed, place the transmission on the jack. Secure the transmission to the jack with a chain. Raise transmission to engine.

  1. NOTE: Align the orange balancing marks on converter stud and flywheel bolt hole if balancing marks are present.

Rotate the torque converter until the studs are in alignment with the holes in the flywheel (6375).

  1. NOTE: Before installing the torque converter to the flywheel retaining nut, a check should be made to ensure that the torque converter is properly seated. The torque converter should move freely with respect to the flywheel. Grasp the stud. Movement back and forth should result in a metallic clank noise if the converter is properly seated. If the torque converter will not move, the transmission must be removed and the torque converter repositioned so that the impeller hub is properly engaged in the pump gear.

Move the torque converter and transmission assembly forward into position, using care not to damage the flywheel and the converter pilot. The torque converter face must rest squarely against the flywheel. This indicates that the converter pilot is not binding in the engine crankshaft (6303).

  1. Connect EGR tube assembly.

  1. Position transmission assembly to engine and install retaining bolts. Tighten to 50-68 Nm (37-50 lb-ft).

  1. Install nuts retaining torque converter to flywheel. Tighten nuts to 27-46 Nm (20-34 lb-ft).

  1. Install starter motor (11002). Refer to Section 03-06A.

  1. Install fluid filler tube.

  1. Connect transmission shift selector mounting bracket.

  1. Install transmission support crossmember (6A023) assembly. Refer to Section 02-03.

  1. Connect harness connectors to output shaft speed (OSS) sensor and transmission range (TR) sensor.

  1. Install vehicle speed sensor (VSS) (9E731) and electrical connector.

  1. Remove transmission jack from under vehicle.

  1. Position driveshaft yoke inside extension housing (7A039).

  1. Connect both fluid cooler inlet tube and fluid cooler tube. Tighten to 20-26 Nm (15-19 lb-ft).

  1. Install driveshaft. Refer to Section 05-01.

  1. Install exhaust system components. Refer to Section 09-00.

  1. Remove safety stands and lower vehicle.

  1. Connect battery (10655).

  1. Fill transmission with fluid.

  1. Start engine and check transmission operation.

  1. Close hood (16612).
