Section 07-01C: Transmission, Automatic, 4R70W | 1996 F-150 (4x2) (4x4) and Bronco Vehicles Equipped with 5.0L Engines Workshop Manual |
NOTE: Completely clean all transmission components, including torque converter (7902), cooler, cooler lines, main control valve body (7A100), all clutches and all check balls after any transmission servicing that generates contamination. These contaminants are a major cause for recurring transmission troubles and must be removed from the system before the transmission (7003) is put back into service. In addition, the cleaning of debris from the direct clutch check ball is often omitted. This omission can lead to a repeat servicing of the transmission. Cleaning and flushing procedures for check ball can be found under Cleaning and Inspection in this section.
Do not soak the transmission fluid filter in solvent cleaner. The filter material could disintegrate. Replace filter if transmission fluid is contaminated.
Disconnect the battery negative cable.
Raise the vehicle on a hoist and support with suitable safety stands.
Place a drain pan under the transmission pan. Starting at the rear of the transmission pan and working toward the front, loosen the bolts and allow the fluid to drain. When fluid has drained to level of pan flange, remove all of the pan bolts except two at the front, as this will allow the fluid to further drain. With fluid drained, install two bolts on the rear side of the pan to temporarily hold the transmission pan in place.
Remove the converter drain plug access cover from the lower end of the converter housing.
Remove the converter-to-flywheel nuts. Place a wrench on the crankshaft pulley bolt to turn the converter to gain access to the nuts.
Using the wrench on the crankshaft pulley bolt, turn the torque converter to gain access to the converter drain plug. Place a drain pan under the torque converter, and remove the plug. After the fluid has been drained, reinstall the plug.
NOTE: To maintain initial driveshaft balance, mark the REAR driveshaft yoke and axle companion flange so they may be installed in their original positions.
Disconnect the driveshaft from the rear axle and slide shaft rearward from the transmission.
Install a seal installation tool in the extension housing to prevent fluid leakage.
Disconnect the cable from the terminal on the starter motor. Remove the two bolts and remove the starter motor.
Disconnect harness connectors at both the output shaft speed (OSS) sensor and the transmission range sensor.
Disconnect shaft linkage at the manual control lever.
Position a transmission jack under the transmission and raise it slightly.
Remove the engine rear support-to-frame retaining nuts and bolts.
Remove the right- and left-hand (if equipped) support bracket retaining nuts and bolts and the bracket(s).
Remove the engine support insulator, engine support and engine damper mounting body bracket (if equipped).
Lower the transmission to gain access to the fluid cooler lines.
Disconnect each fluid cooler line from the fittings on the transmission.
Remove the bolt(s) that secure the transmission fluid filler tube to the cylinder block. Lift the filler tube and the dipstick from the transmission.
Secure the transmission to the jack with a chain.
Remove the converter housing-to-cylinder block bolts.
Carefully move the transmission and converter assembly away from the engine and, at the same time, lower the jack to clear the underside of the vehicle.
Remove the torque converter and mount the transmission in a suitable holding fixture.
