Extension Housing Seal, Gasket and Bushing

Removal

  1. Open hood and disconnect the battery ground cable (14301).

  1. Raise vehicle on a hoist. Refer to Section 00-02.

  1. Remove muffler inlet pipe and resonator. Refer to Section 09-00.

  1. Drain transmission fluid. Refer to Transmission Fluid Drain and Refill in the In-Vehicle Service portion of this section.

  1. Remove driveshaft. Refer to Section 05-01.

  1. Disconnect harness connector and remove the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) (9E731) from the extension housing (7A039).

  1. Position a transmission jack under the transmission and raise it slightly.

  1. Remove the engine rear support-to-frame retaining nuts and bolts.

  1. Remove the right- and left-hand (if equipped) support bracket retaining nuts and bolts and the bracket(s).

  1. Remove the engine support insulator, engine support and engine damper mounting body bracket (if equipped).

  1. Lower the jack under the transmission and allow the transmission to hang.

  1. NOTE: The extension housing bolts have been coated with a sealant. More break torque may be required to remove these bolts.

    Using a 13 mm socket, remove six extension housing bolts. Slide extension housing off output shaft. Remove and discard extension housing gasket (7086).

  1. Remove extension housing seal using Seal Remover T74P-77248-A. Ensure seal remover lips are firmly seated under the flange on the extension housing seal.

  1. Inspect extension housing bushing (7A034). If required, remove the extension housing bushing using Extension Housing Bushing Remover T77L-7697-A.

 

Installation

  1. If removed, install new extension housing bushing using Extension Housing Bushing Replacer T80L-77034-A.

  1. Install new extension housing gasket and extension housing. Tighten six bolts to 24-30 Nm (18-22 lb-ft).

  1. Install new extension housing seal using Extension Housing Seal Replacer T61L-7657-B.

  1. Raise the transmission. Install the engine support insulator, engine support and engine damper mounting body bracket (if equipped). Refer to Section 02-03 for torque specifications.

  1. Lower the transmission. Install the support bracket(s) and the retaining bolts and nuts. Install the engine rear support-to-frame retaining bolts and nuts. Refer to Section 02-03.

  1. Remove the transmission jack.

  1. Connect the muffler inlet pipe and resonator to the exhaust manifold. Refer to Section 09-00.

  1. Install the vehicle speed sensor and connect wiring.

  1. Install the driveshaft. Refer to Section 05-01.

  1. Remove safety stands and lower the vehicle. Connect the battery ground cable.

  1. Pour 4.7 liters (5 quarts) of specified fluid into fluid filler tube. Start engine and add fluid as required to achieve the proper fluid level. Refer to Check Fluid Level and Condition under Verification of Condition in the Diagnosis and Testing portion of this section.

  1. Check the transmission, torque converter (7902) assembly and cooler lines for leaks.
