Section 07-01C: Transmission, Automatic, 4R70W | 1996 F-150 (4x2) (4x4) and Bronco Vehicles Equipped with 5.0L Engines Workshop Manual |
Removal
Open hood and disconnect the battery ground cable (14301).
Raise vehicle on a hoist. Refer to Section 00-02.
Drain transmission fluid. Refer to Transmission Fluid Drain and Refill in the In-Vehicle Service portion of this section.
NOTE: Transmission pan to case gasket may be reused if in good condition.
Using a 10mm socket, remove 14 transmission pan retaining bolts, transmission pan and pan to case gasket.
Remove pan magnet. Clean transmission pan and pan magnet.
CAUTION: If installing new filter, and grommet remains in main control bore, carefully use a small screwdriver to remove it. Take care not to damage main control bore.
NOTE: If servicing for contamination-related failure, use a new filter and grommet. Filter may be reused if no excessive contamination is present.
Using both hands, remove filter by pulling downward.
CAUTION: Do not pull on wires. This may damage wires or connector and could result in a transmission concern. If required, carefully pry up on locking tab and disconnect the connector.
Grasp connector at each solenoid or sensor and pull straight out to disconnect.
Using a 8mm socket, remove one bolt retaining manual control valve detent lever spring (7A261) to the main control valve body (7A100).
Remove EPC solenoid bracket retaining bolt. Remove bracket.
Using a 8mm socket, remove remaining 24 valve body-to-case retaining bolts, the main control valve body and the main control valve body gasket.
Installation
Install main control valve body gasket, then the main control valve body using the two alignment bolts as a guide.
Install the EPC solenoid bracket. Loosely install one long 6mm bolt.
Loosely install 11 long and 12 short valve body-to-case retaining bolts.
Install manual control valve detent lever spring and one bolt.
Tighten the 25 main control valve body-to-case retaining bolts to 9-11 Nm (80-100 lb-in) in sequence as shown in the following illustration.
Main Control to Case Bolt Tightening Sequence
Connect wiring connectors to transmission fluid temperature (TFT) sensor, shift solenoids (7G484), EPC solenoid and TCC solenoid.
Inspect transmission fluid filter. If OK, reuse. Install filter and grommet.
Install pan magnet in transmission pan.
Clean and inspect transmission pan to case gasket. If OK, reuse. Install pan to case gasket on transmission pan.
Install transmission pan to transmission. Tighten all bolts to 12-15 Nm (9-11 lb-ft).
Remove safety stands and lower vehicle. Connect the battery ground cable.
Pour 4.7 liters (5 quarts) of MERCON® Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or -DDX or MERCON® equivalent approved fluid into fluid filler tube. Start engine and add fluid as required to achieve the proper fluid level. Refer to Check Fluid Level and Condition under Verification of Condition in the Diagnosis and Testing portion of this section.
Check transmission for leaks.
