REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

Axle, Rear

 

Removal

  1. NOTE: Axle shafts (4234), rear hubs (1109), rear wheel bearings and the inner wheel bearing oil seals can be replaced, lubricated or adjusted without removing the differential (4026) from the rear axle housing (4010) or the rear axle assembly (4006) from the vehicle. Refer to Section 05-02E.

    Loosen the wheel stud nuts.

  1. Disconnect the shock absorbers (18080) from therear axle (4001), and unclamp the rear stabilizer bar (5A772) if so equipped. Refer to Section 04-02. Then raise the rear end of the vehicle frame until the weight is off the rear springs (5560). Place safety stands under the frame (5005) in this position.

  1. Disconnect the rear brake hose (2282) and rear axle vent hose at the frame.

  1. Disconnect the driveshaft (4602) from the rear axle universal joint flange (4851). Disconnect anti-lock speed sensor connector and brake load sensor proportioning valve linkage. Refer to Section 06-06.

  1. Remove the nuts from the rear spring U-bolts, and remove the rear spring caps. Refer to Section 04-02.

  1. Roll the rear axle from under the vehicle, and drain the lubricant. Remove the wheels. Mount the rear axle in a work stand. To remove axle shafts, rear hubs or hub and rotor assemblies, refer to Section 05-02E. To service differential, refer to Disassembly and Assembly in this section.

Installation

  1. After installing the rear wheels, roll the rear axle assembly under the vehicle.

  1. Install the rear spring U-bolts and spring caps. Tighten nuts to 272-368 Nm (200-270 lb-ft).

  1. Connect the shock absorbers, and install the rear stabilizer bar in position. Tighten shock absorber to 300-405 Nm (220-300 lb-ft). Tighten stabilizer bar bolts to 37-50 Nm (27-37 lb-ft).

  1. Connect the driveshaft to the rear axle universal joint flange. Refer to Section 05-01 for installation instructions and torque specifications. Connect anti-lock speed sensor connector and brake load sensor proportioning valve linkage.

  1. Connect the rear brake hose at the frame and bleed the brakes. The rear axle vent hose is part of the rear brake hose and uses a special "flow" bolt to secure the hose block to therear axle. Connect hose at frame.

  1. Fill the rear axle with the proper grade and specified amount of axle lubricant or equivalent meeting Ford specification WSP-M2C197-A. This is a different lube than that used in Fordrear axles.

  1. Remove safety stands. Lower the vehicle to the floor.
