CLEANING AND INSPECTION

Starting System

Wipe field coils, armature, commutator and armature shaft with a clean cloth. Wash springs, shims, thrust washer, trip collar, locking collar, and brush end housing assembly in solvent, and dry the parts.

Examine contacts on starter solenoid assembly and, if necessary, clean them with very fine sandpaper or crocus cloth.

The starter solenoid windings can be tested for internal shorts or open circuits with an ohmmeter. Connect instrument across windings and note reading. Resistance of pull-in winding should be 0.14-0.16 ohms, while resistance of hold-in winding should be 0.65-0.70 ohms. A low reading will generally indicate an internal short circuit, while no reading at all indicates an open circuit.

If starter solenoid contacts are badly burned or starter solenoid winding is shorted, replace solenoid assembly, then adjust drive travel.
