Exhaust Manifolds, Right and Left

Removal, Right

  1. Raise vehicle.

  1. Remove exhaust manifold-to-exhaust pipe nuts.

  1. Lower vehicle.

  1. Remove nuts and upper intake manifold support bracket, transmission dipstick tube bracket, engine oil dipstick tube bracket, and wire bracket.

  1. Remove nuts and spark plug heat shield (12A406).

  1. NOTE: Exhaust manifold studs/bolts vary by length and type both by location on the particular vehicle and by model. Note which studs/bolts go in appropriate holes.

Remove studs and bolts and right-hand exhaust manifold (9430).

  1. Loosen tube nut securing EGR tube to exhaust manifold fitting.

Removal, Left

  1. Raise vehicle.

  1. Remove exhaust manifold-to-exhaust pipe.

  1. Remove tube nut at rear of manifold.

  1. Lower vehicle.

  1. Remove nuts and front lifting eye.

  1. Remove engine oil dipstick tube bracket and coil bracket.

  1. Remove secondary air injection manifold tube (9B449) on vehicles with C6 transmission.

  1. Remove nuts and spark plug heat shield.

5.0L and 5.8L Front Lifting Eye

Installation, Right and Left

  1. Clean mating surfaces of the exhaust manifold(s) and cylinder head (6049). Clean the exhaust pipe spherical seat on the manifold(s) and the exhaust pipe(s) sealing area.

  1. Inspect exhaust manifold(s) for cracks and damaged gasket surfaces. Use a straightedge to check for warped exhaust manifold cylinder head port branches. Replace unserviceable manifold(s).

  1. Install left exhaust manifold, studs and bolts. Working from center to ends, tighten to 35-43 Nm (26-32 lb-ft).

  1. Install left spark plug heat shield and nuts. Torque heat shield nuts to 16-24 Nm (12-18 lb-ft).

  1. Install front lifting eye and nuts. Tighten to 16-24 Nm (12-18 lb-ft).

  1. Install right exhaust manifold, studs and bolts. Working from center to ends, tighten to 35-43 Nm (26-32 lb-ft).

    (12-18 Lb-Ft)
  1. Install right spark plug heat shield and tighten nuts to 16-24 Nm (12-18 lb-ft).

  1. Inspect EGR tube and replace if rusted through or damaged. Install valve to upper intake manifold. Tighten EGR valve studs to 18-26 Nm (13-19 lb-ft). Tighten tube-to-intake manifold fitting nut to 27-34 Nm (20-25 lb-ft) for 5.0L engine. For 5.8L engine, tighten to 61-75 Nm (45-55 lb-ft).

  1. Install coil bracket, transmission dipstick tube bracket and upper intake manifold support bracket. Tighten nuts to 16-24 Nm (12-18 lb-ft).

  1. On models with C6 transmission, install secondary air injection manifold tube. Tighten tube nuts to 23-34 Nm (17-25 lb-ft).

  1. Raise vehicle and install exhaust pipe(s) retaining nuts. Thread one nut half-way and tighten the other to 33-49 Nm (24-36 lb-ft), then tighten the first nut to 33-49 Nm (24-36 lb-ft).

  1. Lower vehicle, operate and check for leaks.
