Camshaft Bearings

Camshaft bearings are available prefinished to size for standard and 0.381mm (0.015-inch) undersize journal diameters.

Removal

1. Remove the engine (6007). Refer to Engine in the Removal and Installation portion of this section. Install engine on a work stand.

2. Remove the connecting rod caps, flywheel (6375) and crankshaft (6303). Push the pistons to the top of the cylinders.

3. Remove the camshaft rear bearing cover. Refer to Section 03-00. Remove the camshaft bearings with Camshaft Bearing Set T65L-6250-A.

4. Select the proper size expanding collet and backup nut and assemble on the expanding mandrel. With the expanding collet collapsed, install the collet assembly in the camshaft bearings. Tighten the backup nut on the expanding mandrel until the collet fits the camshaft bearings.

5. Assemble the puller screw and extension, if necessary, and install on the expanding mandrel. Wrap a cloth around the threads of the puller screw to protect the front bearing or journal. Tighten the pulling nut against the thrust bearing and pulling plate to remove the camshaft bearings. Be sure to hold a wrench on the end of the puller screw to prevent it from turning.

6. To remove the camshafts (6250), install the puller screw from the rear of the cylinder block (6010).

Installation

1.  CAUTION: Failure to use the correct expanding collet can cause severe bearing damage.

   Position the new camshaft bearings at the bearing bores, and press them in place with Camshaft Bearing Set T65L-6250-A. Be sure to center the pulling plate and puller screw to avoid damage to the camshaft bearings.

2. Align the oil holes in the camshaft bearings with the oil holes in the cylinder block before pressing camshaft bearings into place. Make sure the front camshaft bearing is installed 0.51-0.89mm (0.020-0.035 inch) below the front face of the cylinder block.

3. Install the camshaft rear bearing cover.

4. Install the camshaft, crankshaft, flywheel and related parts. Do not check connecting rod and main bearing clearances as a part of camshaft bearing replacement.

5. Install the engine in the vehicle.
