Section 03-01A: Engine, 4.9L SFI | 1996 F-150, F-250, F-350 (4x2), F-150, F-250 (4x4) Workshop Manual |
As the coolant flows through the cylinder block (6010), it travels through passages to cool the entire length of each cylinder wall. The coolant is then directed upward into the cylinder head where it cools the combustion chambers, valves and valve seats.
The coolant from the cylinder head (6049) flows into the water outlet connection. If the water thermostat (8575) is open, the coolant flows through the water thermostat and into the top of the radiator. If the water thermostat is closed, the coolant is returned to the water pump (8501) for recirculation.
