Cleaning

  1. If not removed as part of engine disassembly, remove oil pump (6600) as outlined in Section 03-01A (4.9L SFI), Section 03-01B (5.0L and 5.8L MFI), Section 03-01C (7.5L MFI) or Section 03-01D (7.3L diesel).

  1. If not done already, lift out oil pump intermediate shaft (6A618).

  1. Remove two screws and oil pump screen cover and tube (6622), and oil pump inlet tube gasket (6626).

  1. Remove the cover attaching bolts and the cover.

  1. Remove the inner rotor and shaft assembly, then remove the outer race.

  1. Drill a small hole and insert a self-threading sheet metal screw of the proper diameter into the oil pressure relief valve chamber cap and pull the cap out of the chamber. Remove the spring and plunger.

  1. Clean all parts in solvent and dry them thoroughly with compressed air. Use a brush to clean the inside of the oil pump housing and pressure relief valve chamber. Make sure all dirt and metal particles are removed.

Inspection

  1. Look for deep scoring in cover. Light concentric scratches only indicate that the pump has been used and are acceptable. If cover is deeply scored, replace oil pump.

  1. Look for scoring or wear on the shaft. If severely scored, replace.

  1. Inspect the rotor for burrs or score marks.

  1. Remove minor imperfections from parts with an oil stone.

Rotor Clearance

  1. Using a straightedge and feeler gauge, make sure inside of cover is flat. If a 0.038mm (0.0015 inch) feeler gauge can go under straightedge, oil pump should be replaced.

  1. Insert the inner and outer rotor into the housing.

  1. Place a straightedge over the rotor assembly and the housing.

  1. Measure the clearance between the straightedge and the inner rotor, then the outer rotor. Clearance must not exceed 0.10mm (0.004 inch).

If clearance is excessive, replace oil pump.

Tooth Tip Clearance

  1. With inner and outer rotor installed, use feeler gauge to measure clearance between inner and outer rotor at tip of inner rotor furthest from outer rotor.

  1. Check against specifications in Section 03-01A (4.9L SFI), Section 03-01B (5.0L and 5.8L MFI), Section 03-01C (7.5L MFI) or Section 03-01D (7.3L diesel).

  1. If clearance excessive, replace oil pump.

Outer Rotor-to-Pump Body Clearance

  1. Using feeler gauge measure clearance between outer rotor (race) and housing.

  1. Check against specifications in Section 03-01A (4.9L SFI), Section 03-01B (5.0L and 5.8L MFI), Section 03-01C (7.5L MFI) or Section 03-01D (7.3L diesel).

  1. If clearance is excessive, replace oil pump.

Pressure Regulator Valve Inspection

Inspect valve plunger for scoring and free operation. Light scratches may be removed with a crocus cloth.

Pressure Regulator Valve Spring Inspection

  1. Inspect for breaks, cracks, tilting, and collapsed coils.

  1. Using Valve/Clutch Spring Tester TOOL-6513-DD or equivalent, check valve spring tension. Check against specifications in Section 03-01A (4.9L SFI), Section 03-01B (5.0L and 5.8L MFI), Section 03-01C (7.5L MFI) or Section 03-01D (7.3L diesel). A weak spring must be replaced.

Pressure Regulator Valve-to-Housing Clearance

  1. Using plug gauge, measure regulator valve bore.

  1. Using micrometer, measure outside of plunger.

  1. Subtract plunger diameter from bore size and check against specifications in Section 03-01A (4.9L SFI), Section 03-01B (5.0L and 5.8L MFI), Section 03-01C (7.5L MFI) or Section 03-01D (7.3L diesel). If clearance is excessive, replace oil pump.
