Timing Gear Backlash, 4.9L

  1. NOTE: Phenolic resin camshaft timing gear wears faster than hardened steel crankshaft gear. It is usually sufficient to replace just the camshaft gear if backlash is excessive.

    Remove timing gear cover as outlined in Section 03-01A.

  1. Install Dial Indicator with Bracketry TOOL-4201-C or equivalent on cylinder block as shown in the following illustration.

  1. Check the backlash between the camshaft gear and crankshaft gear at six equally spaced teeth. Hold the gear firmly against the cylinder block (6010) while making the check.

  1. Backlash should be 0.1-0.25mm (0.004-0.010 inch).
