Section 01-20A: Restraints, Active | 1996 F-150, F-250, F-350, F-Super Duty and Bronco Workshop Manual |
WARNING: THE SHOULDER BELT SHOULD BE USED ONLY ON THE SHOULDER THAT IS CLOSEST TO THAT SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. THE BELT SHOULD NEVER BE WORN UNDER THE ARM. IT SHOULD NEVER BE WORN OVER THE INSIDE SHOULDER. IF THE SHOULDER BELT IS NOT USED PROPERLY, THE CHANCES OF INJURY IN A COLLISION GREATLY INCREASE.
WARNING: EACH SEATING POSITION IN THE VEHICLE HAS A SPECIFIC SAFETY BELT ASSEMBLY WHICH CONSISTS OF ONE BUCKLE AND ONE TONGUE. THE SAFETY BELT ASSEMBLY IS DESIGNED TO BE USED AS A PAIR AND IS NOT TO BE USED ACROSS SEATING POSITIONS.
WARNING: MAKE SURE THE LAP PORTION OF THE BELT IS FITTED SNUGLY AND AS LOW AS POSSIBLE AROUND THE HIPS, NOT AROUND THE WAIST. FAILURE TO DO SO MAY INCREASE THE CHANCE OF INJURY IN THE EVENT OF A COLLISION.
WARNING: IF THE SHOULDER BELT IS OFF YOUR SHOULDER OR ON YOUR UPPER ARM, THERE IS A GREATER RISK OF SEVERE INJURY IN A COLLISION.
Safety Belts, Fastening
Insert the belt tongue into the proper buckle until a snap is heard and it is felt to latch. Make sure the tongue is securely fastened to the buckle.
Safety Belts, Unfastening
Push the release button on the buckle. This allows the tongue to unlatch from the buckle.
While the belt retracts, guide the tongue to its original position. If the tongue is not guided, it may strike an occupant or part of the vehicle.
Shoulder Portion Adjustment
Pull the lap/shoulder belt from the retractor so that the shoulder portion of the belt crosses the shoulder and chest. Make sure the belt is not twisted. If it is, remove the twist. For repair procedure, see Safety Belt Twisted at the Safety Belt Guides or Safety Belt Tongue Rotated on Belt in the Service Procedures portion of this section.
Lap Portion Adjustment
On outboard combination lap/shoulder safety belts, pull up on the shoulder portion of the belt to tighten the lap portion to a snug fit. Make sure the belt is as low on hips as possible.
Center safety lap belts are equipped with manually adjusted lap belts for center seat occupants. Insert the safety belt tongue into the proper buckle until a snap is heard. Pull on both sides of safety belt to ensure the buckle is latched. Pull up on the loose end of the safety belt to tighten the lap portion to a snug fit. Make sure safety belt is as low on the hips as possible.
Jump Seats
To adjust the lap belt for the jump seat, tip the tongue at a right angle to the belt. Pull the tongue away from the belt until enough slack is obtained to reach the buckle. Insert the belt tongue into the buckle until a snap is heard and it is felt to latch. Pull the loose end of the belt away from the tongue, keeping the belt as low on the hips as possible.
