Section 01-16: Wiper and Washer Systems

DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION

Washer System, Windshield

The washer system consists of a push-type control switch integral with the turn signal and wiper switch, a windshield washer reservoir (17618), windshield washer pump (17664), and necessary hoses (17543) and nozzles.

To engage the washer, push the knob of the wiper switch toward the steering column. If the control switch is at the OFF position or in one of the interval settings, the wipers will run as long as the knob is depressed. When the knob is released, the washer will stop immediately, but the wipers will continue to run for one to four sweeps, then return to their previous set operation. Washer engagement does not affect wiper operation when the control switch is in the LO or HI position.

The washer system jets expel a single oscillating stream that appears as a wide fan on the windshield. Care should be taken to only actuate the washer switch momentarily because of the greater volume of fluid that is dispersed with this system.
